Carmen Baudín is staff researcher at Instituto de Cerámica y Vidrio, CSIC (Ceramics and Glass Institute, ICV, CSIC, Spain) since 1989.
Starting in the field of structural ceramics, advanced and refractories, and since 2008 on biomaterials, her most significant research contributions concern the relationships between microstructure and mechanical behavior.
The research activity includes development of specific equipment and methodologies for mechanical characterization of advanced ceramics and refractories in both oxidizing and reducing atmospheres.
She has coauthored more than 200 research articles, especially in the Journal of the European Ceramic Society, conference papers and book chapters.
Carmen is Professor for different master programs of Spanish and Latin-American universities, is supervisor of post-doctoral, doctorate and undergraduate students, examiner of PhD theses for universities in Spain, Europe and Latin-America and has been visiting professor in European and Latin-American universities.
She leads and participates in Spanish and European R+D+i projects, most in collaboration with the ceramic industry. Since 2000 she is advisor of producers and users of refractories, mainly in the areas of structural integrity and corrosion.
She has worked for the European association of manufacturers of refractories (PRE) on standardization issues. She is passionate about international collaboration in ceramic research, which she considers as fundamental for development of high-quality materials for better Society and Environment. Since 2002 she has participated in European networks (Marie Curie, Erasmus, COST) and built an Ibero-American CYTED network on refractories.
Carmen is an Honorary member of the Spanish Society of Ceramic and Glass (Sociedad Española de Cerámica y Vidrio, SECV), where she has been active as elected officer of the Refractory (1996- 2003), Basic science (2008-2010 and 2016-2020) sections, Vice-Secretary (2011) and General Secretary (2012- 2016) and currently President of the Technical Ceramics section.
She has been Chief Editor (2012- 2016) of Boletín de la Sociedad Española de Cerámica y Vidrio (BSECV, Journal of the Spanish Ceramics and Glass Society) and is currently Associate Editor.
She has been representative of SECV in the Council of the International Ceramic Federation (2007-2022).
Since 2007, she has been active in the European Ceramic Society as member of Council (2007- 2017) and of the Permanent Executive Committee (2008-2010 and 2016-2017) and also Treasurer (2011-2015). She was Chair of the XIV Conference of the European Ceramic Society, held in Toledo, Spain, in 2015 and also participated in the organization of several ECerS conferences, as member of the International Advisory Board and as chair of the topics of advanced structural ceramics, composites and refractories. From 2011 to 2015 she was Treasurer of the Journal of the European Ceramic Society Trust.
